Educating the Heart

At Kids Connection, one of our core pillars is

“the emphasis on character development that helps children learn to be quality individuals and ethical leaders.”

We call this “Educating the Heart”.  Many schools focus on academics or social involvement, but what makes Kids Connection unique is the way in which we connect the education of the mind and the heart, and we provide both. By showing our students what it means to be a good person, they learn what it feels like to achieve, for themselves and others. It is from that sense of self and caring that the strong academics follow.  They become true leaders, both in mind and spirit.

In 2014, the Harvard Graduate School of Education surveyed 10,000 middle and high school students to rank what was important to them: Achieving at a high level of happiness (feeling good most of the time), or caring for others.  Only 20% selected caring for others as a priority. • As a school, it is our goal to give our students a true sense of empathy.  How do we reinforce this every day?It is a core part of our curriculum. We reinforce and reward great character every day in the classrooms, on the playground, and in all school activities.
  • We have regular assemblies, where we talk about virtues of responsibility, respect, honesty, and integrity.
  • We have community service initiatives running all year long. This year, we are partnering with the Samaritan House as a Wee Care school to further our reach into the community to help others, and to show our students how to take these skills they have learned to help others.

At Kids Connection, we focus our attention to educating the heart of each and every student. We teach that good character is doing the right thing, even when no one is looking. We believe that true happiness and achievement comes from helping others, not in spite of it. Our mission is to show our students that they have the power and ability to help make the world a better place. Our alumni come back year after year and tell us that it is the foundation they received at Kids Connection, that helped them to continue to accomplish extraordinary things in the community.

Alumni Spotlight: Kempton McCarty

kemptonKempton McCarty (KC graduating class of 2013) attends Castilleja School in Palo Alto. She recently created a website that was chosen by Castilleja to represent their school in the Individual Jr. Website Division at the County level for National History Day. At county, her project was then awarded top honors and went on to compete at the California State Competition in Sacramento. She competed against a pool of nearly 40 other students in her division and made it to the top eight in the state of California! Her website was also awarded a very prestigious award, The Elizabeth Avery Award for Social Justice!

As if that wasn’t enough, Kempton is working on a group project designing an app for Techonvation Challenge. She just learned their app made the semi-finals! This means that they are one step away from competing in the national competition in San Francisco in July where $10,000 is up for grabs to help produce their app!

Kempton’s Mom, Kim, said that “Kempton always says she found her passion for coding and writing at Kids Connection. I know just how instrumental KC was in all her future successes. She has impeccable character, strives for academic excellence, and is a creative, fun loving young lady!”

We are so proud of all that she is accomplishing and the future leader she is becoming. We are so honored to have been part of her journey. Congratulations Kempton!
